The lightning arrester is designed to protect motors and controls from voltage surges caused by lightning, switching loads or power line interferences. Surges of 500 V or more are directed to ground by the lightning arrester. Although the arrester may or may not take repeated surges, no arrester can withstand a direct lightning strike or a surge of unusually high voltage.
